Growing the Sport of Skiing Starting With the Young

Thousands of people make thousands of visits to ski resorts around the country every year. From the seasoned veteran to the first timer, people of all ages and walks of life visit the slopes every winter to seek out the perfect run. In fact the greatest skiers in the world are facing off in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia right now. Although thousands of people already enjoy skiing, growing the sport is not always easy.

Start With the Kids

Obviously, one of the best ways to grow a sport, or any movement for that matter, is to start the recruiting process with children. Getting kids out on the slopes when they’re young will make it much more likely that they’ll continue skiing when they get older. It also makes it more likely that they will teach their children to ski when the time comes, as well.

Learn to Ski

To that end, the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) recently held its “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month”, designed to encourage children, as well as adults, to learn how to ski by signing up for lessons from a certified instructor. The January push was also done to help encourage more experienced skiers and snowboarders to take lessons to improve their skills as well. As part of the initiative, many areas throughout the country offered affordable or even free turnkey lesson programs.

Bring a Friend

The NSAA is also challenging current snowboarders and skiers to help grow their sports by inviting and bringing beginners to the snow. They hope experienced snow buffs will help their friends sign up for lessons throughout the entire skiing and snowboarding season.
